Yoga Against Apartheid Pledge

We join millions across the globe protesting the genocide o the Palestinian people. We, as yoga instructors in the western world, cannot turn away from state sanctioned violence. The US funds 16% of Israel's military budget ~ we freely give $3.8 billion a year to fund the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Palestinians. This does not include the increased funding President Biden has proposed since October 7th. On our own soil, we see the lack of funding for our schools, health care, public spaces, and other essential infrastructure contributes to increased poverty and collective illness ~ all forms of state sanctioned violence.

Since its founding in 1948, the on-going violence by the Israeli military occupation terrorizes, displaces, and murders Palestinians. Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade for almost 17 years and has been named the largest open air prison. From October 7th to November 6th, more than 10k Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. This includes more than 4k Gazan children. Israel’s collective punishment stirred by Hamas’ attack includes cutting off electricity, water, food, and fuel into Gaza. An unprecedented number of US made bombs have struck bakeries, churches, hospitals, schools, and refugee camps contributing to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza by the Israeli state. The occupation of Palestinian land results in violence for all people in the region.

“By signing this pledge, I, as a yoga instructor and/or studio, am committed to using my voice and actions to put an end to genocide, displacement, and US aid to Israel. It is my responsibility to act in accordance to our yogic philosophies including Yuj (unity), Ahimsā (non-violence), Satya (truthfulness), and Īśvarapraṇidhāna (surrender).”

Here are examples of actions I will participate in as a Yoga Instructor, Studio, or Institution against Apartheid:

  • Acknowledge the grief, violence, and suffering of this moment for Palestinians, Israelis, and those in the diaspora. Do not encourage folks to ignore this reality. Speak up in studio, online, and through social media.

  • Offer free or discounted services for the SWANA (South West Asian and North African) community that is grieving the loss of their loved ones.

  • Read Skill in Action by Michelle Cassandra Johnson to incorporate social justice into your yoga teaching.

  • Call your Congress members and demand they sign onto the Ceasefire Now Resolution put forth by Cori Bush. (you can text CEASEFIRE to 51905 for an easy tool kit). Then add your Congress members and Representative phone numbers to your contacts, to easily call every single day.

  • Send an email to your congressional representatives to demand an end to U.S. military funding to Israel.

  • Go to a teach-in or take the time to educate yourself on the history of Palestine. Here is a resource to support your learning. Draw connections between this issue and the other oppressed groups across the world fighting for liberation.

  • Fundraise for organizations in the US organizing actions and spreading awareness like Palestinian Youth Movement and AROC Bay Area.

  • Plan or attend a local demonstration to express your community’s solidarity with Palestine and call for de-escalation, no more weapons to Israel, and an end to U.S. military and financial aid.

  • Join the movement for Boycott, Divestments, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, which is inspired by the anti-apartheid movements in South Africa. Boycott Disney, Starbucks, and McDonald's.

  • Connect with a local or national organization organizing for Palestine year-round to lend your time and healing resources.

  • Where possible, partner with progressive elected officials to advance resolutions in your city calling for the end of U.S. financial and military aid to Israel.

  • Watch non-western news outlets covering Palestinian-Israel colonial war, like Al-Jazeera.

  • Follow journalist in Gaza and educators on social media. Uplift their voices, share news and on the ground coverage:

Many of these call to actions are inspired by the Rising Majority petition, you can join that one

About the Organizers:

Sola Habibi and Alchemystic Studio are putting forth a petition for all conscious yoga instructors and studios to name their support and act in solidarity with Palestinian’s facing dehumanizing genocidal attacks on civilians and children in the West Bank and Gaza. We have noticed a deep confusion by yoga studios, instructors, and spiritualists during this time fueled by western media outlets’ propaganda and outright lies. We are calling for all yoga instructors and studios to break the silence and firmly stand together against all forms of violence.

Sola Habibi is a multi-heritage non-binary queer wellness entrepreneur, creative, and community organizer in California. Their grandfather fled Palestine in 1948 during Nakba ~ Israel’s first large-scale violent siege of land, property, and lives. We are again seeing an unprecedented number of Palestinian civilians violently displaced and massacred by the Israeli occupation. As a yoga instructor and wellness entrepreneur disrupting the status quo of western white-washed yoga spaces, Sola believes that we cannot be well in a sick world. We cannot turn away from injustice and dehumanization in our healing spaces. Yoga builds the capacity for us to endure and hold stress, a tool that can support our liberation movements if we apply it correctly and with deep respect to the original indigenous practices of yoga.

Alchemystic Studio is an inclusive space designed to meld the healing and wisdom of queering re-indigenized yoga with the mission of modern abolitionist movements. We warmly invite seekers and disruptors to co-create communal care and radical cultural elevation for all, and specifically prioritize our LGBTQIA2S++, BIPOC, bigger bodies, sa/dv survivors, chronically ill, neuro-divergent, and otherwise marginalized sacred siblings. We believe in the power of community to help us heal, and to amplify our ability to dismantle harmful systems on an energetic and societal level, so that we may all rise together. Our studio aims to create true solidarity, as we believe a people united can never be divided. We stand against settler colonialism of all kinds, casteism, classism, and all systems in which there is an oppressor and an oppressed. As a space that centers the Queer and Trans POC experience, we stand against the pinkwashing that the so-called ‘western’ world has used to dehumanize Palestinian people. We do not consent to our queer identities and the notion of queer safety to be used to further a genocidal agenda. Queer Palestinian people exist and love and breathe and deserve safety, which can only be accomplished through CEASEFIRE.
